How to Do Calculation for Chrono Acupuncture (Zi Wu Liu Zhu)

(Q5 How to Do Calculation to find the Opened Acupoints for a certain date in a certain hour?)

Here are the ways to do calculation to find the opened acupoints from The Eight Magic Turtle Acupuncture Techniques (Ling Gui Ba Fa). It's more complex to do the calculation from The Day-Prescription of Acupoints Techniques (Na Jia Fa) because of much more related acupoints

Firstly, you need to "translate" all the dates from a Western calendar into Chinese calendar because all the calculation is based on the Chinese calendar, Not on the Western calendar. There used to be a lot of calculation, but it is easy today because you can easily get a Chinese calendar combined with all dates in the Western calendar and check the Days in Chinese calendar directly if you know Chinese. It's hard for you if you don't know Chinese. (I don't know where to get a Chinese calendar listed the Stems-Branches for each day in English.). Secondly, you need to know the 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches in Chinese calendar to do the calculation with which you may not be familiar. For easy understanding of calculation, I use Roman numbers and English letters to stand for the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches: 10 Heavenly Stems are: I = 1. Jia, II = 2. Yi, III = 3. Bing, IV = 4. Ding, V = 5. Wu*, VI = 6. Ji, VII = 7. Geng, VIII = 8. Xin, IX = 9.Ren, X = 10. Gei. 12 Earthly Branches are: a = 1. Zi, b = 2. Chou, c = 3. Yin, d = 4. Mao, e = 5. Chen, f = 6. Si, g = 7. Wu*, h = 8. Wei, i = 9. Shen, j = 10.

* Wu in 10 Heavenly Stems and Wu in 12 Earthly Branches are different. Why? Click Here.

Let us begin the calculation of --

Step 1: Find the codes for Stems and Branches of the days -- Omitting all previous calculations use the following table: Don't confuse Dates and Days.

Table 1 -- the code # of days for MNEF (Zi-Wu-Liu-Zhu)

Code # of Days 10 9 8 7
Heavenly Stems I, VI II, VII IV, IX III, V, VIII, X
Earthly Branches b, e, h, k i, j c, d a, f, g, l

For example, 03/06/2003 (date) is V(Wu)-c(Yin*) day from the Chinese calendar combined with all dates in the Western calendar, the day code is 7 + 8.

*Note: Yin here is different from the Yin in "Yin or Yang" bellow.

Step 2: Find the code # for Yin or Yang days for MNEF (Zi-Wu-Liu-Zhu):

Table 2-- the code # of Yin* or Yang days: Use the 10 Heavenly Stems only

I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X
Jia Yi Bing Ding Wu Ji Geng Xin Ren Gei
Yang Yin Yang Yin Yang Yin Yang Yin Yang Yin
9 6 9 6 9 6 9 6 9 6

For example, 03/06/2003 is V(Wu)-c(Yin) day from Chinese calendar, it's a Yang day, the Yin-Yang code is 9. The Yang days are always 9 while the Yin days are always 6.

Step 3: Find the code # for hours for MNEF (Zi-Wu-Liu-Zhu):

Table 3 -- The Branches of the hours in the Chinese calendar:

The Earthly Branches for hours (12 Shi-Shen) a b c d e f g h i j k l
24 Hour Period 23-1 1-3 3-5 5-7 7-9 9-11 11-13 13-15 15-17 17-19 19-21 21-23

For example, 11 pm (23:00) and 12 am (0:00) is a; 1 am (1:00) and 2 am (2:00) is b; 2 pm (14:00) is h.

Table 4-- the Beginning Stem-Branch at a (Zi) hour, 12 am (0:00) of that day: I-a, III-a, V-a, VII-a, IX-a

If the Day is I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X
Beginning Stem-Branch at 0:00 (Zi hour) is I-a III-a V-a VII-a IX-a I-a III-a V-a VII-a IX-a
Stems-Branches after 0:00 are (checked from Table 5)

For example, 03/06/2003 is V (Wu) day, the Beginning Stem-Branch at 0:00 (12 am) is IX-a (Ren-Zi).

Table 5-- The Stems-Branches of the hours after 0:00 (Zi or a hour) are following from the Beginning Stem-Branch at 0:00 (Zi or a hour) of that day in number Sequence: from I-a, or III-a, or V-a, or VII-a, or IX-a

1. I-a 2. II-b 3. III-c 4. IV-d 5. V-e 6. VI-f 7. VII-g 8. VIII-h 9. IX-i 10. X-j
11. I-k 12. II-l 13. III-a 14. IV-b 15. V-c 16. VI-d 17. VII-e 18. VIII-f 19. IX-g 20. X-h
21. I-i 22. II-j 23. III-k 24. IV-l 25. V-a 26. VI-b 27. VII-c 28. VIII-d 29. IX-e 30. X-f
31. I-g 32. II-h 33. III-i 34. IV-j 35. V-k 36. VI-l 37. VII-a 38. VIII-b 39. IX-c 40. X-d
41. I-e 42. II-f 43. III-g 44. IV-h 45. V-i 46. VI-j 47. VII-k 48. VIII-l 49. IX-a 50. X-b
51. I-c 52. II-d 53. III-e 54. IV-f 55. V-g 56. VI-h 57. VII-i 58. VIII-j 59. IX-k 60. X-l

For example, 03/06/2003 at 2 pm. 2 pm is h hour (Table 3); 03/06/2003 is V day from the Chinese calendar; the Beginning Stem-Branch at 0:00 for V day is IX-a (Table 4); So we begin from 49. IX-a (Table 5) and find the Stem-Branch of h (hour) in this day period is 56. VI-h.

Table 6 --The code # of hour for MNEF (Zi-Wu-Liu-Zhu):

Code # of Hours 9 8 7 6 5 4
Heavenly Stems I, VI II, VII III, VIII IV, IX V, X
Earthly Branches a, g b, h c, i d, j e, k f, l

For example, 03/06/2003 at 2 pm. We find The Stems-Branches for 2 pm (Table 5) already.

So the Code # for 2 pm in 03/06/2003 is 9 (from VI) + 8 (from h).

Step 4: Calculation Formula for the acupoint # of MNEF (Zi-Wu-Liu-Zhu):

( Code # of Day + Code # of Hour) divides Code # of Yin-Yang Day ... the residue = 8 Hui Acupoint #

For example, 03/06/2003 at 2 pm. The code # for date 03/06/2003 (V-c day) is 7 + 8 (from Step 1); the code # for hour 2 pm on 03/06/2003 is 9 + 8 (from Step 3); the code # of Yin-Yang days for 03/06/2003 is 9 (from Step 2).

(7 + 8 + 9 + 8 ) / 9 = 3 ... residue = 5 = # 5 of 8 Hui Points. It's K6 (Zhaohai). You may check your MNEF (Zi-Wu-Liu-Zhu) Calendar or go to the Instruction Page of MNEF (Zi-Wu-Liu-Zhu) to match this result.

You must do the calculation in Chinese Calendar. Forget the complex calculation, we have done all the calculation for you already. Just use our MNEF (Zi-Wu-Liu-Zhu) Acupoint Calendar simply!
